Picasso nailed it!
Picasso is a true artist and yes, he nailed it. I am not saying this because Picasso is a praised and world renowned artist. He probably was a bully and certainly a very hard person to live with. Nonetheless, Picasso is simply a fantastic artist who produced great art, and who pitilessly deconstructed his own work to generate even greater art.
He started drawing and painting at a very young age and, undoubtedly, had a facility for creative arts. Yet, we can’t summarize his genius to his pre-puberty talent only. Like all gifted people he had a strong will to learn, an immeasurable curiosity to try new things and an insatiable desire to improve.
Picasso studied pure academic painting and acquired all the required knowledge to become skillful and excellent in the art of painting. Later, in his early twenties, when he had fully mastered a certain method he was curious enough to try out new adventurous approaches. From then on he was to break many barriers of established techniques and bring about an entirely new era of painting. He initiated his blue period, he participated in the introduction of cubism with co-painter Braque and he engaged in surrealism. By the end of his life, he let his inspiration go loose. He deconstructed everything he had done before, wildly experimenting in new forms and colors. This is my favorite period.
His perpetual search for excellence led him to ceaselessly push the limits. Once Picasso knew enough of one technique he continued on beyond to search out the unexplored frontiers of his art . He never surrendered to the comfort of habits and proceeded until the end to continuously shake up the established conventions.
Picasso is the incarnation of a true Master. He was the finest draughtsman and painter of his time. He experimented with new techniques, he brought true innovation, he created fabulous art, he inspired generations to come and that's great!
